Studi e formazione: 'Autodidatta - Suo fratello, proprietario di un teatro di provincia, lo impostò alla recitazione nei primi anni del secolo, dove si mise in evidenza da ballerino e attore per pantomime.
Figlio di sordomuti, è stato il più celebre trasformista della storia del cinema con una serie interminabile di personaggi malformati e orripilanti. Fu lui a coniare il termine "Maquillage", in seguito riportato nell'Enciclopedia Britannica.
I trucchi erano creati dallo stesso attore, con erbe e liquidi chimici che gli procuravano cali alla vista, continue cefalee e altri dolori fisici.
Soprannominato "L'uomo dai mille volti", ma il pubblico, fino alla sua morte, non fu in grado di conoscerne il vero volto.
Tra corti e lungometraggi, è stato interprete in 137 pellicole con attivismo incredibile. Negli anni '14 e '15 alla media di 30 film l'anno.
All'epoca del muto è stato l'attore più famoso per film kolossal prodotti dalla Universal e dalla MGM, i due studios con i quali ha legato la sua carriera artistica.
Ha interpretato un solo film sonoro, nel 1930, poco prima di morire, a soli 47 anni, per un cancro alle corde vocali.
James Cagney lo evocò nel 1957, attraverso il film L'uomo dai mille volti.
Si è sposato una prima volta con la canatante Cleva Creighton, dalla quale ha avuto un figlio divenuto in seguito attore con il nome completo del padre, Lon Chaney jr., pseudo ideato dalle majors nella speranza, fallita, di poter creare un nuovo Chaney. Dopo il divorzio, si è risposato con l'attrice Hazel Hasting.
Ha detto: - "La maggior parte dei miei ruoli, come nani, deformi e mendicanti, sono stati accompagnati dal tema della rinuncia e del sacrificio, perchč ho sempre creduto che il livello più basso dell'umanità nasconda al suo interno una capacità nobile e suprema".
