Il suo vero nome era William Henry Pratt.

Studia alla London University, ma non termina il corso e nel 1909 emigra in Canada; prima come bracciante agricolo, poi si unisce a compagnie teatrali e compie numerosi tour nel nord dell'America. Si stabilizza a Los Angeles, dove inizia a fare cinema nel 1919 come caratterista in The Dumb Girl of Portici al fianco della diva Anna Pavlova.

Lunghissima trafila, prolungata oltre un decennio e costituita da comparsate per film a basso costo. Raggiunge il successo nel 1931, all'avvento del sonoro, con Frankenstein. Da qui in avanti si afferma illustre rappresentante del cinema fantasy anni '30, raccogliendo l'ereditą di un grande del muto per questo genere: Lon Chaney. Non lascia il testimone a nessuno; in questo campo, solo Peter Cushing, Vincent Price e Christopher Lee riuscirono, in parte, a raccogliere la sua ereditą artistica.

Deve gran parte del successo al suo truccatore, Jack Pierce e al regista che, pił di altri, ha creduto ciecamente in lui, James Whale.

Dopo il periodo "horror" ha rivelato, nel cinema, eccellenti doti drammatiche e qualitą di commediante in teatro, a Broadway, come in Arsenico e vecchi merletti (1941), dove recita in una parodia di se stesso e in Peter Pan (1950) nel ruolo di Capitan Hook.

Verso il volgere della carriera č diventato narratore e doppiatore in numerosi film. Ha fatto anche televisione; tra i molti personaggi interpretati, spicca, in particolar modo quello dell'investigatore, interpretato nella serie Scotland Yard.
