Il suo vero nome era William Henry Pratt.

Studi e formazione: ´Merchant Taylor School´ di Londra - ´Uppingham School´ di Londra - ´King's College´ di Londra.

Contemporaneo di Lon Chaney, è da tutti considerato il suo alter ego sia per i film horror interpretati ma soprattutto per l'uso del trucco, in parte analogo a quello usato dal ´principe dei travestimenti´.

Nel 1909 emigra in Canada; prima come bracciante agricolo, poi si unisce a compagnie teatrali come la Ray Brandon Players, Henry St. Clair Players e la Billie Bennett´s Road Company, attraverso le quali compie numerosi tour nel nord dell'America.

Si stabilizza a Los Angeles, dove inizia a fare cinema nel 1919 come caratterista in The Dumb Girl of Portici al fianco della diva Anna Pavlova.

Lunghissima trafila, prolungata oltre un decennio e costituita da comparsate per film a basso costo. Dopo aver interpretato 80 film totalmente anonimi, improvvisamente raggiunge il successo nel 1931, all'avvento del sonoro, con Frankenstein. Da qui in avanti si afferma illustre rappresentante del cinema horror-fantasy anni '30.

Deve gran parte del successo al suo truccatore, Jack Pierce e al regista che più di altri ha creduto ciecamente in lui, James Whale.

Per girare Frankenstein (1931), č costretto a sottoporsi a 4 ore di trucco giornaliero per tutta la durate delle riprese. Per La moglie di Frankenstein (1935) ben 7, sempre sotto le direttive di Jack Pierce.

Negli anni ´30, la sua figura è presa a modello nelle illustrazioni de ´L'incredibile Hulk´.

Dopo il periodo horror rivela, nel cinema, eccellenti doti drammatiche e qualità di commediante in teatro, a Broadway, come in ´Arsenico e vecchi merletti´ (1941), dove recita in una parodia di se stesso e in ´Peter Pan´ (1950) nel ruolo di Capitan Hook.

Contrariamente all'immagine presentata nella maggior parte dei suoi film, nella vita privata è uomo tranquillo, vero signore con molti amici e particolarmente affezionato ai bambini. Per questi, tra le altre cose, ha inciso numerosi album di successo con storie per fanciulli.

Verso il volgere della carriera diventa narratore e doppiatore in numerosi film. Ha fatto anche televisione; tra i molti personaggi interpretati, spicca quello dell'investigatore, interpretato nella serie "Scotland Yard".

Muore a 82 anni per enfisema polmonare.

Non lascia il testimone a nessuno; in questo campo, solo Bela Lugosi, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price e Christopher Lee riuscirono, in parte, a raccogliere la sua eredità artistica.

Vita sentimentale caratterizzata da sei matrimoni e cinque divorzi. Inizialmente con Grace Harding, poi con l'attrice Olive de Wilton, in seguito con Montana Laurena Williams, con la ballerina Helene Vivian Soule, quindi con Dorothy Stine (una figlia, Sara, nata nel giorno del suo compleanno) e infine con Evelyn Helmore, ex moglie dell'attore Tom Helmore.

Ha detto: - "Mia moglie possiede veramente un buon gusto. Ha visto pochissimi miei film".
