Il suo vero nome era Gretchen Michaela Young.

Terza di quattro sorelle, Polly, Sally e Georgiana, tutte attrici, fa il suo esordio a soli 14 anni e negli ultimi anni '10 si rivela come bambina prodigio del cinema muto.

Con l'avvento del sonoro si distingue tra drammi e commedie, ma è capace di immedesimarsi in qualsiasi genere cinematografico, attraverso personaggi dalla struttura semplice, tanto da rappresentare per oltre un ventennio, la classica donna americana d'inizio secolo.

Lavora anche nelle superproduzioni demilliane; nel 1935 è sui set di due kolossal: Il conquistatore dell'India e I Crociati, ma nel periodo si distingue soprattutto tra genere brillante e avventuroso, recitando più volte con attori del calibro di Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Ronald Colman e Tyrone Power.

Nel 1953, lascia il cinema per dedicarsi con successo alla televisione. Proprio in questo settore vince il Golden Globes per il serial 'Letter to Loretta' e per il film-tv 'Christmas Eve'.

E' stata protagonista del primo western a colori, Ramona, del 1936.

Dagli anni '60 è attivissima nel sociale, cui dedica gran parte del suo tempo, specialmente nelle opere di carità dove si distingue con grande generosità.

Tre matrimoni con due divorzi. Il primo, con l'attore Grant Withers, poi con il produttore Tom Lewis (2 figli) ed infine con il costumista Jean Louis, matrimonio in essere fino alla morte di lui (1997).
